Since this program launched in 2003, over 500,000 people have started making small changes in their lifestyles that are adding up to big health benefits. Jim Hill recently co-authored The Step Diet Book, a personalized program to help people lose weight and more importantly to keep it off. This book presents novel strategies that help people keep off the weight they lose. The book comes with a pedometer and provides practical advice for helping people make permanent lifestyle changes. It promotes walking as the foundation of a healthy lifestyle and is being used by many worksites and other groups to help people lose weight and keep it off. The Step Diet Book has received outstanding reviews from health care professionals and sold more than 140,000 copies since its publication in June 2004 by Workman Publishing. Jim is also the co-founder of the National Weight Control Registry (NWCR), a database which tracks 5,000 people who have sustained significant weight loss for more than five years. The average weight loss in this group is 67 pounds, and participants have kept it off for an average of six years. This is the premier source of scientific information about how to maintain weight loss. Dr. Hill and his colleagues have published numerous articles describing characteristics of successful weight loss maintainers. Jim speaks to groups in the medical and academic communities, as well as corporations, trade organizations and the general public on various health-related topics including obesity, weight control in children and adults and the effects both can have on other diseases such as diabetes. He is an expert in how public and private groups can work together to address obesity.
