Farmers markets to get boost from state aid

ALBANY -- The state is launching a new program to strengthen farmers markets and promote locally grown foods, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said last week.
The New York Fresh Connect Farmers Markets program will provide up to $15,000 per location to help local farmers sell their products in certain communities that don't have a strong market presence.
The program will help the markets set up a system to accept foodstamps and other federally funded programs. The state also will supply a $2 rebate for every $5 in food stamps spent.
"Farmers markets increase farm sales and revenue by bringing farm produce directly to the consumer," Cuomo said in a statement.
"These markets also help underserved communities by providing fresh produce, nutritional education and local jobs."
The funds will go to markets on an as-needed basis. Read More Here
