Castle will discuss her new book, which advocates using local produce and other local foods to create great meals. The event, co-sponsored by the Hendersonville Community Co-op, also will feature samples made from locally grown food. Castle chatted with us by email about her book, gardening and cooking. 1) What's the best part of being a Southern gardener and a Southern cook? I must confess that I'm not much of a gardener, so thank heavens I know plenty of good gardeners and I live a stone's throw from a renowned farmers' market that offers great local food year-round. That access to local, seasonal food is what I mean by the "new Southern garden." A garden doesn't have to be a plot of ground out back. With all the bounty found in backyard plots, patio pots, farmers' markets, roadside stands and CSA farm boxes, many of us can eat from a garden without growing all (or any) of it ourselves. The best part of the Southern garden, by any of these definitions, is that the Southern climate is agreeable and diverse. The South is a mosaic of microclimates, so nearly everything grows somewhere in the South, which gives us eaters and cooks endless options. Read More
